The Staten Island Ferry: New York's best free boat ride

Oct 12, 2026 · 4 min read

Skyline, harbor and a close look at the Statue of Liberty, for no money at all. Here is how to do it well.

Ask a longtime New Yorker for a free thing every visitor should do, and the Staten Island Ferry is usually the first answer. It is a real commuter ferry, not a tour, which is part of the charm.

The basics

The ferry runs between the Whitehall Terminal in Lower Manhattan and the St. George Terminal on Staten Island. It is free, and you do not need a ticket. Ignore anyone selling tickets outside the terminal. The ride takes about 25 to 30 minutes each way and runs around the clock, every day. Boats leave about every 30 minutes, and more often at rush hour on weekdays.

What you will see

The ferry does not stop at the Statue of Liberty, but it passes it, and you get a good look from the water. You will also see the Lower Manhattan skyline, Governors Island and the bridges across the harbor.

Where to stand

On the way to Staten Island, the best views of the Statue of Liberty are usually from the right side of the boat, on the upper outdoor deck. On the way back, stand at the front for the skyline as you return. The lower decks have windows if the weather is rough.

When to go

Weekday mornings after the rush and evenings after about 7 p.m. are the least crowded. Sunset is a favorite, so expect more people then. Afternoons in summer and on weekends can be packed.

How to get there

The 1 train goes to South Ferry, next to the terminal. The R stops at Whitehall Street, a couple of blocks away, and the 4 and 5 stop at Bowling Green, a short walk.

A round trip, and a bonus

You have to get off at St. George and re-board to come back, so plan 60 to 90 minutes for the round trip. If you have time, walk around the St. George area before heading back. Food and drinks are sold on board, but they are pricey, so bring your own.
